BILL CARROLL
Blue Heron Fishing

Above impossibly steady stilt legs
The long, gray neck contorts
Slowly, supple as
The river's viridian current

A seasoned fisherman's surer eye
Judging the heft and speed
Of dawdling fins, the interval needed
To shatter the mirror's surface

Sending relaxed willows and clouds
Fleeing in sudden widening circles,
Diverting dazed and wriggling silver
Down her own dark rivulet.
