When You Take the Toll

you know, the toll.
why do you ask of the rate
the rite of passage
tell them she did not measure up
she was not noticed for
her light
she was not honored by her neighbors
good Christian folk
believe me
go to church
saved in the BLOOD
better get the children in
the crazy lady next door might indeed
eat them
if she don't,
I will
Well take notice that
your children are safe
for
she may
not walk
again

"if the snow..."

if the snow didn't melt
and fall again in the shadow of the
sun
then the mother would not
suckle the young
if the rain did not fall
in the forest and
rise again in the clouds
would we not cease to rejoice
of course
it is even as we say
it is obvious
that we miss the point
the point
it is in the seeking
that we are lost
lost as surely as the rusty pipe
as surely as the rock in the stream
lost
and found again in the
faith of the stream
the faith of the rocks, the
water itself, or
ourselves
as fragile as the rocks
or
flesh
