Vanishing Act

It was on a beautiful moonlit
winter night when old Ernie
in his lonesome cabin died.

His dog howled its sorrow to
the oblique moon which shone
through a dusty window.

For days it sat by his side until
hunger tolled and it took a timid
bite of Ernie's upper arm.

Spring, people came looking for
Ernie everywhere; this vanishing
act a mystery yet to be resolved.

They patted his mournful dog,
which looked remarkable well.
Fed and gave it another home.

JEFFREY C. ALFIER
The Valley of Vision

For Elisha Porat
'And Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace?'
I Kings 19:22

Thrice did he bow himself to war, and thrice
friends became goblets of opened poppies,
blossoms floating on assailable flanks
of the mind. In desert wastes of falsehood,
his wary eye learned not to leave the son
of the stranger to be the vinedresser
lest brass be carried-off to Babylon.

Another season finds efflorescence...
mangos whisper in ungathering light.
Save for orchards and soldiers, he could laugh.

Alfier sends us this wondrous tidbit: 'There is no need to exalt a second-rate poet just because he happens to write in your native language, when you are aware of a first-rate poet in another literature who does the same thing better. Misguided patriotism due to linguistic parochialism vitiates more than one overblown literary reputation.' --  Ivar Ivask, Analogies of Light: The Greek Poet Odysseus Elytis
