Fearful Love

Cherubim turn swords,
cast flaming fig leaves
on a cursed ground.
With bruised heels
we labour
among the bitten,
festering fruits of our ignorance,
making thorns and thistles
of our crowns.
In the sweat of our faces,
a pheromonic resonance.
In our dusty hearts,
skinclad, in cleavage,
we hope to live forever,
flesh closed upon itself,
conceiving sorrow.
Our trees are pleasant to the sight
of gold and onyxstone
and every beast and fowl has its name
except for our nakedness.
In a garden of talking serpents,
cool days and lying Gods,
I betray you to the voice
and hide.

CAROLE NELSON PHILLIPS
She wanted someone else looking back at her

she leaves
the back door open,
carries bread
past dogwood and oak

her shadow solid,
then gone in light
falling
between branches

she walks past
the boatshed,
along a curved path
reaches the lake

2 swans wait,
she squats,
breaks bread,
feeds the swans

looks across the lake,
then down,
sees herself looking back

she stands,
brushes crumbs
from grey cotton
walks back
to the house

closes the door

2 swans fly
her image fading
in rippled water

CAROLE NELSON PHILLIPS, a POETS GOLD award recipient of 12/2001 shows here why the award is most justified. She writes narratives of stark realism that nonetheless suggest the miracle of life.
