CRAIG KIRCHNER
Look for Me At Night

On a couch made of clouds
like a mist in a dream
it will come to you
and you will hasten -
In shoes made of dusk
running you headlong
into the dark,
trampling unseen,
out of control
toward an intuition.

Stars crisp against
the black sky
will melt the brown
low clouds like butter
so the worm moon
can point you
to my ashes.
Poetic 'night' serves many roles. Poets use it as an image of love, death, evil, emptiness. Kirchner welds many of these traditional images into one poem to give it many lives and to serve many meanings. Notice also Kirchner's extended use of sky images, then how he draws us to earth..."butter" "worm" and "ashes".

Wanga

Rough wood altar
draped in cloth.
Symbol on the floor,
drawn in wheat:
verver to evoke
Ogu Ge-Rouge.

Wanga

Cloth doll with
your hair.
Black boujis
light the altar
in the inner
sanctuary:

Wanga

Hounfor readied;
ceremony begins.
I settle my scores
with dolls
and botonica,
spells of ill.

Wanga

I need
no police.
No court
can retrieve
what you took
from me.

Wanga

“Taboo” -
Your word
for what
you don't
want to see

I'll gladly
pay the price
of balance
for a
little
absolution

Wanga

Your Juju is
no protection.
Lwa deny
the guilty.
Our deities
allow revenge.

Wanga

Cry to your
Christian God
for mercy
when you
meet him
at his gates.

Wanga

And you die.
A poem bourne on rhythm, a performance piece for one alone intensifies mood with its longer stanzas (compare to David Harris' DESPAIR). 'I- You', the false dialog works here as a metaphor for encountering the unknown, cultures in conflict, and the mystical.
