Paving the Way

They taught well, those whose responses
to prattle and repetitive questions
gave meaning to words such as invisible or God.
The indelible imprint of their lessons
serve one well when confronted by misery,
defeat, or opposition to nonconformity.
No philosophy dipped in antiquity
nor someone's steepled theology can outweigh
the merits of our elders who heeded the inquiries
of their young charges balancing on the brink of life.
