When It Did Not Rain

It was clouding over monstrous big black elephants 
phantom pregnant with water filled the sky, dogs 
not known for their love of baths went into hiding in 
barns and sheds. We waited but a desert wind came 
blew the clouds northward, sun splashed down and 
drowned the landscape in light so blindingly hot that 
trees sweated sap the size of golf balls which an artisan
later took home and carved beautiful mini figurines in 
trees dark tears of suffering. On yellow powder dust 
in shadows dog silently sleeps but since the moon will 
be full tonight they will be howling all night to a god 
that abandoned them and left them to seek the company 
of humanity for their survival.
