NAN HUNT
Kafka"s Ears
If physiognomy were fate then think of his large ears fluted half-shells, out standing from his narrow head - intricate caverns cupped for the slightest vibration of human action. "so, the impossibility of coming to rest," he said, closeted in his bachelor room ears assaulted by wagons clattering across cobblestones on Old Town Square or by boots drumming the stairs amid the uproar between kitchen pots. Desperate, he imagined himself humble as a snake crawling into his sister"s room to beg her just to talk more softly. Tyrants bullied him in sound bites - the fist and punch of "jste zid?" epithets spattering him as he walked Prague streets. In their shop his father ranted and cursed - About one tubercular clerk, he snarled "Let him croak, the sick dog." It was an ironic prophesy of Kafka"s suffering at forty-one, his larynx sealed against his life. There is within everyone a devil who gnaws the nights to destruction - Kafka advised a friend to harness that demon to his plough like the hermit St. Procopius. Nights into days Kafka pushed his plough - devil attached - a pen scratching long furrows across the white silence.

The Road to Novi Pazar
The spider of dawn Spins no omen I know. Not one augury can I read In the guts of the run-over squirrel. In the arcane book of the seer Every page is blank. Cold water thrown at the fire on the rock Splits the vein but yields no gold. Yet I traveled this road before in a dream, In unwritten texts read the colors of love.

Hammock
You are the hammock where I lay my yearnings during siesta on a summer's day so that they shell have an airy shaking in the midst of imaginary trees in a surprise forest, supposing it is there
