GERALD PARKS, translator Old Wife (V. Giotti, Versi, Trieste 1953) She"s now in bed, in the dark, not quite awake; and she hears the breathing of her husband who"s calmly sleeping, old like her, too, now. And she thinks: it"s nice to feel near me this breathing of his, to feel in the darkness that he"s there, not to be alone in life. She thinks: the dark is scary; maybe because dying is going into a great darkness. This is what she thinks; and listens to that quiet breathing once more, and she is not afraid of the darkness, or of life, or even of dying, that comes some day to everyone. GIORGIO FAGGIN BioBibliographic note on Virgillio Giotti He was born in Trieste in 1887 to Richard Schonbeck, a German, and Emilia Ghiotto, from whom he derived his pseudonym. From 1907 to 1919 he lived in Florence, where he married Nina Stchekotoff, a Russian. He earned his living by selling toys. After his return to Trieste, hr worked as a newsagent and office worker. During World War 2, his sons Paulo and Franco died in the Russian campaign. He died in Trieste in 1957. A good writer of verse and prose in Italian, he was great especially in his poems written in the dialect of Trieste; his first book was Piccolo canzoniere in dialetto triestino (Firenze 1914). In 1957 Ricciardi published the poet"s complete works (Colori). Anna Modena edited a critical edition of this book for Einaudi (1997). She also wrote the illustrated monograph Virgilio Giotti (Studio Tesi, Pordenone, 1992). Copyright 2006, all rights retained by the poet
