TRINA STOLEC
Pocket Change

He reaches in his pockets,
as if seeing
if he has sufficient change
to cover some price.
The contents jingle
as he empties them,
sorts it out –
one metal cylinder for the box,
one for the table.
He lines them up
like tin soldiers
waiting for the fall.
I wonder what's the price
or use
of 27 used bullets
lined up on the table,

and if the boxed ones
cost more.

JASON FRALEY
Note to the Summer Sun on a Winter Morning

You whispered secrets to prairie grass
as I tried to sleep, garrulous tongue
telling long-winded stories like a grandfather
on a rocking chair. Recalling a creaking porch
swing, I threw off the covers,
wiped winter from my forehead, warmth
reminiscent of my dream
that you invited the sun
to sleep with the moonlit night.
