Almost Too Much, This Explosion

riot of rose and pink,
rouge and icy lavender,
wild plum. Days of no
color and now this
almost too much when
pale dove would have
been easier, a little
forsythia sun. Magnolia
fading to raspberry,
subtle, not this jolt, this
flare of brightness,
blinding tangerines and
blood. What happened
to the colorless sky
on Saturday, the one
with no blossoms bark
against pewter so the un-
opened buds had a sliver of
pink. what happened
to that pale, that
less being more, a
single bird against slate
water, not this
cacophony, colors too
loud to touch

Getting Your E-Mail

imagine a letter
coming years after
the writer who sent
it is dead, or weeks
after weeks that
never were what
they could have
been. Nothing
seemed not to hurt
from him, that ache
you feel at 12 and
are supposed to
know is absurd
later Aprils. Well,
I was a mess with
enough pills to do
something awful.
Instead I checked
E mail on the hour,
turned the black to
words, an antidote
for his poison that
almost ruined Paris,
Madrid. I might
as well have been
caught in the trap
of his words,
enchanting then,
tempting, now though I
know he is a spider
who can spin silk,
gorgeous webs,
glistening jewel-
like, then
devoured

Blues in This Wild Plum Lace,
            Forsythia Exploding Monday

raspy voice and
now no music

but those upstate nights,
what was real, hell-bound

dark, glittery as a
black dog in rain

Baby, won't you follow me,
what else could I?

You think I'd change the lock?
Not hang my hair out the window

Baby see what fell thru
black pines. All

that matters is
what's left out
