L. WARD ABEL
Shield

I woke up one day
walking through fire. My own
voice
was that of a stranger, so I rebuffed
its calming. Now I know better
(I tell myself),
as hope is made of that material
that firemen wear
when they enter burning buildings.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines REPAIR: Concourse or confluence of people at or in a place; resort, frequent or habitual going; making one's way; to arrive; to dwell; to heal, to cure, to recover; to renew; (AND!) to fix to original condition. In each sense, www.poetryrepairs.com
"Poetry endangers the established order in the soul."

I balance on a bridge of concrete-- narrow and odd out here on the mountain slope. Beneath me a stream gushes-- so much water here, hot springs, so lush. At the edge of the stream lies a doe -- bloated and perfect killed by her own folly. She must have lost her balance. She must have been startled from up here on the concrete bridge. No hunter had tracker her down no dogs or disease. She had killed herself. It is the futility of balance-- the impossibility of being.

LYN LIFSHIN
COVE POINT

Late July, in white shorts
never believed my legs
would look slim and hard
enough in, we drove to
the lake where Pinky was
already putting rosin on
his bow. Cool enough for
long leaves, the pavilion
glowed from the road,
light sinking into Lake
Dunmore. Night birds,
the terror that no one
would ask me to dance
louder than the creaking
boards or the ramshackle
floor that would burn
in years, the last of the
dance halls. My face,
rose as flames
