| VALERIE MACEWAN His Mother's Son She too adored her son but for decades I kept him sighing and away until finally he acquiesced and returned to her. Bitter and confused, standing alone with boat and camper, and worn-out upholstery because I bargained for the wood. Fabric holds the smells of the past, dust motes of memory filled with animal hair, cigarette smoke, yesterdays passionless sex. Wood contains forest? and although it becomes utilitarian, a man-thing, it keeps forest in its new-sprung form. Wood remembers forest? recalling harmony and sunlight and the feel of summer aligned with the smell of earth and sky. Wood uncovers the forgotten forest, I strip it back to the deep earth place, rub it smooth, lay it bare. Today I fill rooms with oak and walnut. The Oxford English Dictionary defines REPAIR: Concourse or confluence of people at or in a place; resort, frequent or habitual going; making one's way; to arrive; to dwell; to heal, to cure, to recover; to renew; (AND!) to fix to original condition.
