Volume of contributions may prohibit thorough analysis and/or response to your poems - An editorial judgment is but one judgement of the poem (I've written enough to know that brilliant editors accept my work; ignorant editors reject it).
SOCIAL
In a totally encompassing private universe, individual experience manifests tendencies toward unify, difference, and harmony; poets who advocate a tendency REcreate a world - its possibilities, facts, its traditions - and lend structure to society. A social poet reports individual observation in order to change society, tendencies, the world, our perceived universe.
NARRATIVE
Plot, essential to traditional western literature, is often implied in other literature. Narrative poems - in meter, rhyme, and rhythm - often mimic conversational tone (exceptions have been made); our desire is for poems whose language wrenches and awes the readersubmit poems with wit and humor, whose turns, reversals, and recognitions are evocative, informative, rich with meanings.
The confessional (about "me") should nonetheless be about all of us - and the rules of communication apply: "I" is a persona rather than a private self whose "poem" is a biographical diary entry; "IS" contributes no action beyond the copula "A is like B in that both are letters in the alphabet" or equal sign, "she is Jane"; and, "THE" has over two hundred rules of usage - ensure that our international audience will recognize how you are using it or drop it for a more descriptive word.
POETRY
In form and structure poetry has changed and continues to change over time; poets know what poetry is; they know its traditions and know when and how to deviate effectively. |
