JOHN HORVATH JR
Cerberus as Disaster Tourist

flatbed pick-up hellbent
across rising black
water now ripples bend
driver's arm outstretched
then again elbow bent

the driver waves us on
to pass his fresh plowed lawn
dogs feckless to drowning
pull their leashes back
they bark as flesh moves

what cannot move moving
our faces wrinkle and crawl
at unmasked stench
blue body cartoon
about short fast lives.

X - one last kiss.

Creating your own product can have significant advantages. Of course it is not the only way to make money on the Internet. You can make a substantial amount of money on the Internet by selling affiliate products. In fact, making a lot of money is quite easy if you have a substantial number of subscribers in your list or if you have a high traffic website. If you are just starting out with no subscribers and zero traffic it is more difficult. If you stay the course and work hard, the money will come, but it takes time.

One of the problems with affiliate sales is the fact that it is important to diversify. You should have at least three or four affiliates that you deal with. If you have six affiliate products that you are recommending, and send forty viewers to each affiliate site, the odds are slim that you will generate any sales, even though you sent a total of 240 prospects to the various sites. Of course, you could choose just one affiliate, but if the one you choose gives poor service, it could cause you significant problems. You never really know an affiliate until you've had a few sales with them and get some feedback. After all, it is not a wise decision to put all of your eggs in someone else's basket.

You can however, increase your income stream and eliminate some of the affiliate problems.

1) Your first priority should be to develop your own product. That way, you can focus all of your marketing efforts on one product and you know that you are going to give great service. If you had your own product and generated 240 page views of your sales page, you almost certainly will generate some sales.

2) Place free ads with a number of ezines. By doing a search, you can find many services that will post ads in ezines for you. If you are using this kind of blanket service, make sure that you have a disposable email address, as you will get a lot of confirmation emails and tons of solicitations later. By using a disposable email address, you eliminate that problem.

3) Do a search for newsletters and ezines in your niche and place free (or inexpensive) ads with them. Check a few of their back issues to ensure that they offer quality content. Take note of the number of subscribers that they have. This is particularly important if you are paying for an ad.

4) Write articles on subjects related to your product's niche. Make sure you submit each article to at least 50-100 sites. Use the largest over-all sites as well as those that specialize in topics related to your product's niche.

If you are not happy with the amount of money that you are currently making, look into instituting the steps above to increase your bottom line.

KIM WELLIVER
Apollo Easter

When I was six and Apollo,
like a tinfoil dragonfly
circled the circumference of our dreams,
Daddy bought me a new dress.
It was white as butcher's paper
all Easter frills and lace, purchased
with overtime at the rail-yard,
and Momma `doin'
for the white folk in the big house,
her knees leathery as Old Pap's face,
her hands, callused hard as pig-corn.
Daddy's smile as he held the box filled
with mounds of tissue paper,
as he smoothed the white pleats
with fingers dark as molasses,
lit him up,
like the sun glowed behind his eyes.
Momma worked her magic on my hair,
winding woolly nap
into tidy rows, tied up in bits of ribbon
cut from her best slip.
Daddy called me his princess
swinging me up onto his big shoulders,
my patent leathers riding easy
against his ribs as he walked.
The peppermint-tobacco-shirt-starch smell
of his Sunday best, filled me up and I ached
for the whole world to see us,
me sittin' so high and proud
on Daddy's big shoulders.
We stepped out to walk
the eight blocks to church,
all Eastered up, and looking fine.
My father was a giant
and with my head up there
against the blue sky,
so high up I could smell the stars.
Folks looked at us, smiling
seeing him the way
I did: A big man, with a big voice
laughing as he strode along:
A King.
The Grady's drove by
broad farmboy faces leering from the
truck's back, calling out.
'Lookit! It's niggers' on parade!'
They hit Daddy first, sent rotten eggs
Smashing in foul runnels
across his proud face, stinking yolk
splatted onto my skinny legs.
Daddy swung me down, quick,
pushing me behind him.
But the Grady's kept egging us,
throwing wet paper sacks
filled with horse dung, green and wet.
When those thick-faced beery boys finished,
their Easter duty discharged,
they roared off, cheering.
Daddy, bits of shell stuck in his eyebrows,
blood seeping a startling red near his nose,
looked at me; my white dress
smeared with dung and egg,
my hair crusted; rank.
Momma, behind us, began to cry,
not soft, like when Grandma died
but big ugly whooping sobs.
Daddy looked away.
An angry shame burned through me
to see him there, on his knees
egg and blood dripping off his face,
not wanting to look at me.
Not wanting to see.
Something in me died then.
I felt it go, swirling off like a ghost
to float with those astronauts
in some dim blue orbit we could not touch.
We walked home then, me, and Momma,
and Daddy
who suddenly looked so small.
So small.
