OPAL PALMER ADISA
Bouquet of Herbs

the first time
she remembered

truly smelling

basil oregano
chives and lavender

the tears rolled unchecked
down her cheeks

she was no older
than seven

and she remembered
her dream

standing
in the kitchen

taking off the lid
of the pot

and finding a miniature
replica of herself

giggling unscathed
in the boiling water

that very day
she blended

the four herbs
and made a soup

her family
still refers to

as sweet fingers

LYN LIFSHIN ALL ABOUT ME
Writers' Conference Brochure

Sunny in the new flyer. Everybody's smiling, writing under the trees. It doesn't rain, there are no lack flies. Flowers in bloom. No one can see the poet who will black ball you when you're not interested in his bed. Pine smell and night birds camouflage the novelist who packs in the night, moans "if I don't get out of here I'll become an alcoholic or gay. In the photographs, the giddy cradle their paper babies. It's like a Christmas card of the Happy Family before news of any truth leaks out

JEFFREY C. ALFIER
Reflection at an Abandoned Silo
-- Complex 571-5, Madera Canyon, Arizona

Under this desert moon night drains poison from me... Strange to think at one time suspicion built bombers and men of power dreamed this landscape into glass.
