KINSOLVING suggests both Helen's internal world and what the seeing 'overlook' about her. Each stanza embraces that tension between reality and the . 'conceit'.SUSAN KINSOLVING Helen Keller in the News (1880-1968) At age eleven, when she made a mistake, she was accused of plagiarism, of being "a living lie" for writing of violets, mist, clouds, and woe, her ultimate verbal conceit, a rainbow! But Helen triumphed with a poet's best refute. The mind's eye, she told those myopic men, is imagination. She was resolute that words and images came from the brain; they were selfsame. Twenty years later, reporters would rhapsodize over her "big wide open blue eyes." How they could "magnetize, animate, and gaze with such a seemingly seeing glance." Eyes that "almost dance with delight as if they had normal sight!" Eyes "so lively, luminous, and bright!" The press published those hyperboles, unsuspecting of any vanity from a woman who could not hear or see. Yet, Helen had a secret. Such beauty came from surgery. Her big blue idealized eyes were acrylic. The public never knew her trick.
