He is dancing with anger in his conversation, the party's center. He tells how a doctor clumsily begged a moment away from a wrenching career, bent with the stress, breaking down in the hospital. He's tells with wine and camembert. But each stare, each glass holds the glint of wine in the light and death. The two stars of the party, the man and his death. The bed they put him in, the monitors placed to measure, tubes hooked like lampreys out of his arms. He has lumps to prove it. He wants to prove it. Always. Now at every party death has moved in to the conversation. Death dances with the complacencies of ordinary anger — family, work, office politics, freeways in clog, all that envy. A man who knows this anger suffers in his bones, for his life lingers in mistakes doctors make and doubts everything to do with the widgets they stuck into him the moment he was home, free, here and gone. Now, always, the star of the party, he laughs in anger. He is talking to death, the eyes in the room.
