JANE HUTTO
The Garden
Where rabbits dance and pools of moonlight show how seedlings sprout, my garden grows. No hefty melons lodge, nor do the cantalope wind along a dusty path between my peas and and beans. With bees and birds, those bedecked with fur and I collect the bounty sun, along with rain, has sent.

SUE KENDRICK
Frolics And Fun Of Creative Writing Exercises, Workshops And Prompts

One of the writing exercises involved drawing a character name from a hat and then giving a verbal portrait while holding a lighted match! You can imagine how this concentrates the mind and there were one or two nipped fingers! To her credit, our tutor was quite safety conscious and made us hold the matches over a small bowl, which alas, did not contain any water. If it had the partly spent matches would not have ignited during our lunch break and triggered the smoke alarm!

Oblivious to the drama, our little group sat happily in the sunshine munching our sandwiches and wondering which classroom was burning down! A slight exaggeration as the only damage was a heavily scorched table and the loss of our morning's writing prompts. I often wondered if that little episode robbed me of a best seller!

The point of all this little story of course, is to show that any situation in life can be used as the basis of a short story, screen play or poem. Inspiration is everywhere! You just need to keep your ears and eyes open and preferably have a note pad handy to record any unusual events or sayings.

Attending creative writing workshops and courses will not only teach you the craft of writing and how to present it in an entertaining and publishable way, but will invariable introduce you to a lot of fascinating and probably off beat characters which you can easily make good use of in your own story lines.

[editor: These places are great for meeting poets and writers committed to their craft.]

ELISHA PORAT
Salamanders on the North Border Road
Two salamanders are crossing the North Border Road. Sluggish and indifferent, they Creep under the borderline barbed wire. I stop The patrol. Above the ravines and fields, Silence suddenly drops for a moment: we watch Their orange backs, a poison color, their tails Striped black, and their evil aura darkens The morning light. I feel the danger, And give an order, but even helmets and Bullet-proof vests can't help when your terrain abruptly explodes: in the orange glow I can see the creatures: evasive, lazy, innocent, As if they don't carry on their backs Marks of fear and mortal hints.
