ELISHA PORAT
Khamsin on the Hills
Do you remember that khamsin on the hills? The branches full of thorns sent to us by the thirsty wild plums? The blazing rocks and the scent of toasted pine needles? The blush that rose on your cheeks, and the drops of your gentle sweat? My soul reached out to you then my love. And I did not guess there that such would be our lives: crowns of thorns, and the heat of the khamsim, and the blush of the sweat of love. And the sorrow that eats at us from inside for the speed of elusive time and the lightning vision of painful memory, flying away.

I have many things to write unto you but   I will not write with pen and ink
--JOHN the theologian

LYN LIFSHIN
When Death Could Come Fast Enough to Leave You as the Not That Young Woman in the Coffin with Chipped Purple Nails
Do you really want to spend your time being a good, being a lady? Don't you want to put a black line thru those calendar dates for things you said you'd do but never wanted to? Those graduations and dinner parties where you hear about the African priest so furious about condoms he'd prefer Aids for the 6th time. You don't need to. Sip champagne instead on the deck and cut the phone cord, put on be:138 or an exotic, hardly available man half your age. Wouldn't you rather paint in lace bikinis, even the ones a dead love liked? You don't have to pole dance in Dupont Circle or give up vitamins but when the years dissolve behind you like the wake of a boat at night or small towns moving toward the mid west, don't you want to want what's wild and light like glass in a kaleidoscope, always startling, gorgeous

In Gold
He makes her appear in gold. Forces metal to conform to the wave of her hair, curve of her scarf, line of her dress. Only gold can convey the glint in her eyes, sheen of her curls, glisten of her flesh. Only gold contains enough value to immortalize her. Her pedestal is pure ivory, polished to marble glow. Gold flesh, ivory bone He watches her every day, no longer afraid she'll run away. Eternity his to give and her tears make the best polish for gold.
