NICHOLAS HOFFMAN
Wet Feet
The porcelain tub rings with the filling water splattering on hidden gold and the creaky pipes sighing under the pressure of time We all need to get our feet wet sometimes Just step in the water and try with all our conviction To furrow our toes and dig for something deep and fossilized So I step-in and swivel my ankles around the clean basin into a knot with nowhere to search But decide to sink deeper and take a closer look Wash hair Shave Rinse Face Repeat There the lines become clearer the foggy stains and the crooked drain and all the trails of little bugs looking for a damp home They leave lines behind light match-strikes of red on the wrists and thighs and the pipes let out a wail The bath water a steaming cauldron We feign to scream Still searching for the treasure which between every wound and painted brow Speaks dirty promises

ROBERT M. HENSEL
Poetry at Play
A poem is but a thought, a mere memory caught at play. One's visions reenacted, by the passing of each day. Treasured waking moments I've accumulated along the way, shall be locked within these pages, where they're forever bound to stay.

I Travel
I travel lines only. Lines carry me. Holes in the ground, through cement is cement. Honeycomb bubbles on the end. I stand in lines.

Wet Feet TOP  Wet Feet   NICHOLAS HOFFMAN  . After reading the next two poems, you should return to HOFFMAN where you can re=examine his playfullness.
Poetry at Play MID   Poetry at Play   ROBERT M. HENSEL,  . Rhyme and play are essential to humourous poetry; for a more serious kind of poetry, rhyme and play work well as significaqnt points or turns in the poem from one idea to another. Rhyme and play may appear in nursury rhyme where it is most welcome, as children are wont to rhyme in their game songs. In a poem of a grander scheme it would surely seem odd to rhyme as if at play.Hensel makes an important point. Whether you rhyme or not, a poet should be at play with the universe as he or she makes its more attainable for the reader.
