Mediocrity Weeps to Behold Greatness
My new dentist is admiring the great works of my old dentist in my mouth, and it makes me feel like a museum of fine arts of sorts with twenty years of gilded masterpieces filling my walls. He has never seen such beautiful margins, he says more to himself than to me, impressed and incredulous and more than a little jealous as he examines each one with our mouths wide open, tapping with his tiny round mirror as if to wake us from this dream of impossible beauty and perfection. Thank you doesn't seem the right thing to say somehow, yet I say it anyway and with so many amazed fingers camped out on my tongue it comes out sounding like "hankie." That's when he abruptly turns off the light and wheels his stool away somewhere behind me where I can't see him wiping the tears from his eyes.

PAUL HOSTOVSKY
Dermatologist
I think I was in the fourth grade when I first learned the word epidermis. I went up to each of my friends in turn and said, "Your epidermis is showing," and each looked down to see if his fly was open because epidermis and penis have the same happy ending. I knew back then already that knowing more than others about the largest organ in the human body puts you at an advantage. "The functions of the skin," I would say to my date, years later in medical school, as we sat in my car outside the movie theater, "include absorption, excretion, insulation, synthesis of vitamin D, and sensation." Then I'd demonstrate this last function by touching her lightly on the arm, and then the cheek— "Do you follow, love? "—and if she said yes, on the breast. And if she said no, I would tell her about the 50 million bacteria living on the surface of each square inch of human skin, which no amount of cleaning can remove. Then I'd smile a little sadly, put the car in drive, and tell her that moist and dry skin, ecologically speaking, are as different as rainforests and deserts, and without elaborating, drive her back through the world to her dormitory.

there's a new school of thought around persistent sinus infections
the medical center Internist with a newly acquired title Doctor so impressed with himself had to say excuse me leaving me alone\I helped myself to band-aids dropping several into my leather bag he returned several minutes later with my script slip had to have a real doctor fill one out couldn't do it himself his superior mentor boss who's words the Internist came back and repeated to me that there is a new school of thought letting me in on the mysticism of medicine when all he had to tell me if my sinus infection didn't clear up with ten days of antibiotics I should come back in for further treatment and more pills - but he didn't say that full of himself self-impressed letting "there's a new school of thought" hang in the air there - that some doctors treat persistent sinus infections with 3 weeks of antibiotics be he wouldn't do that just yet try the ten days then come back> jeez just sounds like common sense without a whole school around it
