VERNON WARING
the hungry prince
she sits on a bar stool, her legs encased in tight gray slacks, a wrinkled cigarette dangling from her  full red lips standing on her too-high high heels, she makes sure every eye is on her someone makes a lewd remark she laughs, heads out the door, walks a few blocks to her squalid room where she joins her old man on a shabby bed gazing up at the ceiling, she wonders if her baby, only a few feet away, will sleep through the night her old man - drunk, mumbling - reaches out to touch her she turns away, squinting at the faded wallpaper suddenly the el rumbles by, the windows shake and her baby cries out shuffling to the crib, she lifts him up, holds him close, their heartbeats caught in some primal sync "it's time," she whispers, cradling him, kissing him, stifling her tears "it's time to feed my hungry prince"

ABIGAIL B. CALKIN
After Christmas Dinner
…for friends
Candles burn down…now out. Air smells heavy of beeswax. Empty mahogany chairs still hum conversation. Ornaments on crown molding hang now lifeless. Each empty wine glass cries out: I am your friend, 'though we'll not dinner here again! Teapots of Alaska wild rose and southern sassafras cool among rose petals scattered pink, red, white across linen tablecloths. In place of one who did not come sits the Muse--before her, a blue plate, a red glass of half-drunk water. Grey pearls blow in on a nor'westerly wind, chill my heart: Al and I will be gone next year.

RICHARD JORDAN
Basic Functions
We men are rather indifferent to the whole process. My dog--he has a higher purpose. We sometimes let out private but emphatic grunts or moans. My dog-he sends his message to the whole of canine population. We, in public restrooms, let our eyes wander to size up competition. My dog-with essence says, males keep away; this is my domain. We usually just do what we do, then quickly flush it away. My dog-his remains say: hey, all you bitches out there, I'm ready and I'm willing. A shame we modern men cannot tap into the basics of this function. But then... My dog sniffs butt. And I write poetry.
