Childhood's a gamble, a buzz bet on how life will be risked. Losses rattle through the months, resilient the resources to go on and on, grow as we dare, get caught, get straightened out they call it. Some need more thrills, the lily pads quick feet, water, over and over cross again. Adulthood pounded in, we cough it out the rest of our lives until we can choose not to gamble or find ourselves with bull horns to beat games we charge with any means we can plot—and if a novelist plotted this way who would read the book. Good. I'm old and stay in love. Let's say I've won and most of glee still clings.

Spare Moments
Sit here, looking out the window, wondering if a better mother would reattach the clothesline instead of letting it rest on the grass waiting for it to be buried by leaves, relieved to be free of laundry. Student sends an e-mail saying she'll bring me wine, a most appreciated gift when one lives in a dry town, and asks if we can get high. I think of zero tolerance. Zero tolerance, that's all this town breeds. Still, there's my daughter. Daughter is off with Girl Scouts. I call an unambitious student, ask if he's interested in joining me on the twenty mile drive to liquor store, but he coughs, exaggerates illness, says he needs more sleep, more food, and I feel old looking for something I shouldn't. Temporarily free of parental duties while daughter's at the Monster Mash, and I remain at home, reading about writers, thinking unchristian thoughts of lust, inebriation, recognizing the side effects of living in the Bible Belt, teaching college students, being a mother.

RICHARD FEIN
Last Steps and First
I was her crutch, her shepherd's staff, her staid walking stick, my arms firmly around her, her thin arm around my shoulder as step by step we made progress across the frayed carpet to the bed where I opened my arms and let her go, let her go, but she surprised me once more with her strength, strength enough to pull the heavy blanket over herself in one strong tug. Above was the dresser with its museum of black and white photos, one of them was of her firmly holding up the arms of an apprentice toddler as I took step by new step across the carpet of this very bedroom.
