Cloud City
CLOUD CITY I've heard that high above Saturn there hovers a huge hexagonal cloud a honeycomb or maybe a Star of David its symmetrical sides dense enough to dance upon Though I often walk around with my head in the clouds I'd risk a visit for the rest of me to one of our own planet's cloud-cities to ski skate bounce on its streets float on its sur But I fear the cirrus ladders of jet streams would offer no solid rungs to climb down and avoid a fatal plunge when the clouds move leaving only shafts of air my life up high more fragile more transient than love than delight than my brief time on the ground

CAROLE NELSON PHILLIPS
For Lena
one of those weeks you know? ..and I'm seeing it like a black cake & I'm icing it red.. then cutting it & each slice is a memory.... a child, the skin off tainted milk is scraped up, packed in one suitcase & set in shame on the steps of her grandmother's house lena removes visible aspects of the child, burns underwear, pink dresses bow waisted & kitten bordered. cuts wool cloth, green, black , sews it into straight shifts, one cat head pocket, no zips she cuts off the hair the child sits on & the shorn child is a refugee in her grandmother's house & stops speaking, runs thin fingers across delicate glass, watches with silent eyes as some things grow & other things die inside behind a chintz chair in lena's house, the child hides a book to be found, pencil drawings on lined paper, bodies, big on top of small & the silent child calls from the pages. the book vanishes, and lena buy's a brown suitcase, packs up the tainted skin of the child, three wool dresses & leaves it on the grey steps of another house

KARREN LaLONDE ALENIER
When Jane Met Paul
inimical, she said
blond but not amicus as in curiae not friend of my court but courtly no ami but cuss persistent not exactly gadfly more mysterious more dangerous is he fair, this composer poseur—the eyes don't lie do I like him? do I? what if I sit in his lap? what if I let him touch my hand? what if, what if I stick my tongue out. I say Paul Bowles my enemy.
