GAIL ENTREKIN
My Brief Experiment in Magical Thinking
I held my father's hand, directed my spirit into his failing body, closed my eyes and willed, say, half my strength over to him, figuring with half I could make a comeback, being young, make new blood, new cells in my sturdy bones, and when I looked up from my efforts, and he was still there in his metal bed, still dying, still staring in terror at enormous bugs on the ceiling, I knew, and I never forgot, that loving him that much was what I could do, and saving him was what I couldn't.
