The spruce are first to feel dawn lifting night from their struts. They've saved us again from U. Especially evergreens sift dark powers into portions we learn to tolerate. But slippery on the newborn and dew on the van, signs U once cared.

The tree reports on maintenance
Eve hates the sight of stumps. When the caretaker comes, she hides. Adam runs toward the hum of machinery, the standup mower, the leaf blower, weed whacker, chain saw. His forearms ache to wield that power and shun the humble rake and shovel provided. He wants a tool belt with pliers and wrenches not lianas with dangling acorns. I share Eve's relief when peace returns. Often they fight after the trim. She doesn't want landscaping this often but he wants it weekly and to do it himself. Stymied, he points to me, “Now those are apples! Rib, make us a pie.”
