HAL SIROWITZ
Relief from Boredom
"In Bryn Mawr, PA, George Baird, returning from a party at 5 a.m., banged at the back door, was greeted with gunfire. Hospitalized, he learned that he had returned to the wrong house in the wrong town." TIME Capsule/1944
I could understand why my wife was mad at me, he said, for returning home so late without calling to let her know I'd soon be arriving, but to greet me with gunfire was very unlike her. We moved to the suburbs to get away from urban violence. We both decided we would rather be bored than shot at. Boredom is only a temporary phenomenon – a good movie can stop it for a few hours. Whereas, knife scars or gunshot wounds last for the rest of your life. So when my wife started to shoot at me, all I could think about was she must have been in a Philadelphia state of mind. Unless, it wasn't her doing the shooting. But they say domestic crime is usually committed by someone you know. Besides my wife, who else did I know? We just moved in. I hadn't gotten to know the neighbors, yet. Now, I don't think they'll want to know me.

STEPHANIE PACHECO
For Sylvia
Fathers always bring damage. I don't feel as healthy anymore. Green leaves that fall and don't stop falling. I've slept over your coffin all night. forgetting and remembering why you died. I wake to a memory. The loving child lace dress. Wrapped with layers of kisses. Lines on your face. Cracks on the walls. They lean on you the way clothes lean over a skinny body. The red blood dripping from your thighs tells the truth. No one will ever know all the damage he's caused you Like 3million knives slipping slowly into your back. Your love is the pain of a winter pink day.

KARL KOWESKI
novel
taking a piss I can see where the floor is decaying beneath the discolored linoleum near the bathtub my wife hates this house her resentment seeps into her every spoken word until I'm not quite sure if she despises the house or me for putting her here before our marriage I had her convinced I was a writer a novelist not that it mattered but I needed to feel important so I cultivated the belief that any day could be the day I would hear from some big publishing house in New York City promising fame along with a check large enough to rescue us large enough to ensure I would never have to punch another timeclock large enough so Marie would not have to feel so knotted up inside when she figured bills but there is no novel not this year or next not here not in New York City not even in my mind
