VALENTINA CANO
Deprivation
Disperse the colors and sounds. Wave them away like scarves; wind them down like spools. There should be nothing in this room but echoes that sing like manic birds. The walls, the floors, the ceiling, must be carved out of the stone of silence, licked smooth and clear by chipping solitude. That is the only way you'll hold me. That is the only cage I'll enter. Lock the door behind me until your eyes are the only candles.

KENNETH ASHWORTH
Comes The Revolution
Eleven time zones in Russia, each with its own small sun. Fathers who cannot tell the hour of the day recall the day of year the last blind moon hung in the spires of St. Petersburg. Washerwomen rise early, fire kettles to boil black babushkas wrung to stiffen into rat tails by the stove. I am inhabited again by spirits of slain Cossacks who cry out for onions and more blood. Hands inside me turn, other voices vow: 'Soon, brothers, soon; We take back all the clocks in the room'. copyright 2003 KENNETH ASHWORTH
