The Music Box Rickrack A Proctological Version of 'What Comes Around, Goes Around'

JANET I. BUCK
The Music Box
74 days ago, I brought you an ice cream cone and sat on the edge of your bed, watching every feeble move. Prickling at the sight of a catheter bag strapped to your leg, I wanted to carry your pain. We planned the menu for birthday #89, arriving in less than a week. I bought new dishes and silverware, ordered fresh crab, rubbed a hundred avocados in a store to find the perfect three. This had to be dinner fit for a king. 1,759 hours ago, you died. I can't stop counting vacant days. I served the dinner and didn't eat, just staring at your empty chair. Ever since that cold November afternoon, my smile has been a flat white line on an EKG machine; I'm strapped in the seat of a shot-down plane, my wings blown off like autumn leaves. Your address stays put on my contact list, so I can send you a joke. Are you free of suffering now? I need to know; I have to know—to make some sense of misery. My doctor gives me bottles of Zoloft & Xanax, “sandbags for the crying jags,” but they don't stop, but they don't stop this flood without the famous ark. Your faith in me caulked the holes the scalpels left from dozens of risky surgeries. Your laughter was my music box, now stuffed with searing memories— their coals on fire, too hot to touch. The heavy lid falls on my thumb, crushing my knuckle like soda crackers under a boot. The noise of silence screams in my ears. You made the winter warm just by walking in the room.

I never did get used to the official start of spring pinging back and forth like an indecisive dog instead of laying well fed in the sun predictably on March Twenty-First. Nor the other seasonal fits and starts. Nor my very pathetic father who crated up suddenly and moved us north in the Bel Air Wagon away from the familiar creped smog of the city the irony of the vehicle lost on my mother, my sister before they all gave up and crept quietly back. Nor the rover eye I married for high flying escape necessitating another jagged uncertain lurch down. Perhaps if I count carefully and circle ten times before sitting. Perhaps if I paint an Asian harmony symbol on my front stoop. Perhaps if I give a dollar to the homeless man on my corner each morning. I can halt some of the zig stall some of the zag add a little level to the mood.

JIM DUNLAP
A Proctological Version of 'What Comes Around, Goes Around'
Aging Baby-Boomer, Intrepid warrior, Child of the 60's, Rebel extraordinaire, I gave the Establishment The naked finger... I fought its pig-headed Conservative stubbornness... I made a difference; I was plugged in To the generation Of flower power And free love. Thirty years later, Urged to submit To a prostate exam, Turnabout is Fair play. It's time to Get plugged By the vile Establishment, And a latex- Covered Finger.
