LESLEY VALDES
Memento Mori
Liver stinks. The sin goes yellow, the gut distends, the odor seeps, the odor stinks, a stink more earth than gaseous, more sweet than sulphur. Skunk demon! Shit smells better. Drowning would be easier. Drowning from the inside now. Strange plot: skeins of blood and bile and mucous swell the bulge of Sergio. Beseech the white coats: Drain the cavity, varnish the box!

BILL CARROLL
Parallel Parking
Redwing blackbirds scold me from their telephone wires, parallel lines that intersect far from this deflated opossum at my feet; life, volume, and 3-dimensional geometries ironed from him one careless night upon this blacktop moebius strip, this asymmetrical road that wriggles and sheds beneath my feet, instructing me past postulates of whorled milkweed, horsemint, and sweet goldenrods, the theorems of cabbage butterflies and lemmas of barn swallows. How shall I explain to my friends how effortlessly I whittled way this pithy summer, parallel parking in a non-Euclidian universe.
