LESLEY VALDES
Thief!
For Joan
That May I left and came back East, friends lent their fine old house -- chestnut panels, window seats, the purple couch: a spider to the pomegranate. My friends had lived in Jeddah. Good jewels and spices. In the dining room, his ancestors eye- to -eye, their English beauty un-faded. The 19th- century botanicals are from her side. I wanted things I'd never thought about: the sea glass near the cyclamen, an idle antique table. Wants hovered with the dust balls. Each morning, I filled the bird feeders. I tried to write. At night I was afraid of one brown bat. My last day in the poet's kitchen I took the (pig shaped) cutting board.

I have many things to write unto you but I will not write with pen and ink

WARD KELLEY
The Visuals of It
It appears to be shaped like breasts or buttocks, the repetition of plumpness or rounded protuberances of flesh, half living, half ephemeral. Prone figure eights, abdomens of wasps, the dead ones struggle, struggle, to convey a succinct image: half, half. I am poorly made for this business of fielding the grounders of the dead ones, and sometimes I feel it is indeed my mind that is half by half. "Half by half," the dead ones nod then flit off.
