Land of Roses
I grew up in Roseland. Mmmmmmm Rose Land.  The name seems to epitomize the epicenter of utopia. A wonderful place to raise your children and with panoramic views of lush green grass and roses and other aromatic flowers every color… . In my land of Roses Roseland is one of the deadliest inner-city neighborhoods on the Southside of Chicago. There, it is commonplace to see gang sergeants running drills with new foot soldiers as young as 5 years of age. Preparing them for the ongoing war…. Vice-lords Verses Gangster Disciples, Verses the Chicago Police Department, Verses all neutrons.  Where the drug dealers are seen as super stars, the gangs were an extension of your siblings, the prostitutes were called aunty, and the drug addicts were our handy men . In my land of Roses We were one big happy community as it would seem, cramming to relax in the fleeting moments between the drive-by shootings. I was a kid, and this was my worldview In my land of Roses The seconds flow into minutes, we scuttle into the daily hum-drum of our lives, savoring the moments of peace when the sound of crickets and the gentle humming of the occasional car passing is the only noise pollution… until suddenly [Pow pow pow pop pow]  five thunderous gun shots ring out, women and children are hitting the floor crying; only God knows who in this very moment is dying In this my land of roses.
