One Act
She lives without chandeliers. Once she searched for these and balconies and window boxes brimming with zinnias. She thought reality was a veil you lifted, where dreams were found alive and squealing. She lives half her days in theaters now, safe from a careless light playing tricks with her cheap makeup and thrift store dress. She's safe there, away from her room where love visits her once a week, expecting no chandeliers.

Heat of the Day
While the heat outside is white, burning this green land dry and pale I sit in darkness eat green shoots drink distilled water and inhale purified air. Dogs, cats and rabbits squashed as we drive passed in air-conditioned splendour Is my only goal in life to get old have my picture in the paper telling other fools, who dream of perpetuity, to eat greens and not smoke now that we have lost our faith and longevity is the only thing to look forward to. Car bombs explode charred body, torn limbs caught on camera to fill a slot on the evening news. Close up now let's see the tears of grief the human-interest story. I sit in darkness and wonder about my goal in life

JANE HUTTO On the Edge of Hope
It wasn't much, a flower basket, blue birds winging, and a nod to the north, but ti ti was in bloom on Pleasant Hill when James found his paper moon and hope ran high, like the pompano when they sense a taste of home. Indian Hills would be a milestone, much more than an experimental suvey, so Elizabeth took these tokens and went to the chapel to wait.
