ELIZABETH KERLIKOWSKE
Dog Rondo

That tired dog on thawing ice was white and smelled like spice from boathouse attics. I curled up in his ear and whispered Pup before the thaw take my advice and get to shore. I said it thrice. But he was dead. Paradise had scooped him up, his threads tired of dangling. No fisherman would sacrifice to drag the still warm corpse from ice but after midnight, all furred up, he joined us for a frosty cup of crossing-over wine and slice of bone. Sweet dog thawed twice.

ELIZABETH KERLIKOWSKE
Before the Sis Visits

I will wash the floors but not on hands and knees. There is sorry and there is abasement. I will not wipe the baseboards. Life’s evidence crumbs under the toaster. I will sweep up the cat hair or shake it from the rugs (and still there will be cat hair.) In the heart’s reckoning we were both born on her birthday. Although we’re done with twin beds, I will give her my room. The dust is good, so deep that all the table tops are XO’d. I will not mop; I will clean the toilet. The minute hand and second hand are one at noon. A spot’s cleared on the mantel. Pine cones land on the roof like years. She may borrow any sweater.

JAN OSCAR HANSON
Men Overboard

On a sheet of fair green ocean the crew of a shipwrecked tanker float bobbing up and down in a synchronized harmony. They have yellow life jackets - a colour that keeps sharks at bay, not that it matters now that seagulls have gouged their eyes out. When night descends gentle as a blanket lovingly tucked around a sleeping child they will be washed ashore on a paradise island of golden sand and coconut palms.and there they will dry and be slim under a tropical sun till they are lighter that the tail feather of a sparrow then they will fly with the prevailing wind and see what they didn't have time to see as crew on practical ships made of steel
