THE BATH

Like a frog staring from a pond, a boy peeks back. I remember him, I want to say ? young reader sprawled in clawed white cast-iron tub. He whispers It's not me, but the body, then splashes in to the distant waters.

PETER KROK
THE ALLEY CAT

I prowl the alleys, driveways, yet unlike the squirrel you don’t find me leaping into cans. I prefer to slip by shy, unnoticeably. My eyes always on the move, or a move always ready . . . Unlike some of the others like the Siamese or Persian, I’d rather roam the yards, the parks than squat before the curtain without claws. I’ve got a human who gives me a bowl of milk and bits of meal but I prefer the squeal of a field mouse to the bowl . . . When I’ve got a tail between my teeth I slink under a maple and quietly chew the warm meat until there’s only bones.
