LYN LIFSHIN
DEAD SQUIRREL ON THE WAY TO THE METRO

there in the road, eyes bloody, thick tail wind whips. I don’t think of the shock opening a drawer upstate when a live squirrel whipped out, flashed, a blur. Home extension or whatever it was called was more scary than the squirrel who was probably only making a nest, shredding shelves of my out of print books and using favorite throw pillows as her rest room “Leave her in a trap unwatched and you go to jail” the squirrel man said. I put up a plywood wall, tossed everything in that den: shards of books, blankets tapestries, a sweater or two. Nights I listened for the return of what I kept dreaming, that it made its way to my bed with teeth and claws leaving a trail of cracked nuts, a warning. Months later, the plywood down, the room almost empty, I was sure I could smell her smell as much as some gone lover who over stayed his stay. I still approach that door gingerly. In this morning’s blue light tho I wanted to scoop up the still uncrushed squirrel off the road where its tail still flutters as if what was alive came from inside

LYN LIFSHIN
THE STRANGENESS
