A.J. HUFFMAN
She Stopped and Allowed Time

She stopped and allowed time to register with danger. It happened after emotion died. She looked up, went to the fire. It could not have been random tampering. Life looked down. She shrugged as if she did not know the answer but then answered anyway. The problem was the world. Silence stood up and joined her at the door. It slid open, realized more than the hour was haunted, converted to Buddhism, and dropped the last few months into anonymous memories scattered on the winds.

A.J. HUFFMAN
I am the Only Landmark

I am the only landmark in the desert of your imagination. My bones glisten like crystal goblets filled with wine. You cannot stop your mouth from tasting this death you have prescribed me. Rotten, you regurgitate the moment, spraying my poisonous seed. I will breed in this absent expanse, fester like an oasis. You will return. My forbidden beauty haunts the hollows of your brain, begs you to walk again, along the wavering edges of a body that refuses reign.

White Flowers of the Sky

after ‘Spring Delights’ by Vladamir Kush

Falling in pieces, I catch myself with tired arms twice my size. Formidable, I am tree without roots, a mockery of myself reflected in the empty river bed. I swallow each recaptured moment of the past, praying for rejuvenation, but autumn is the only season I am capable of. Surviving is my mantra. I will not wither, only remain. My bark will stand as permanent shadow of a life preferring the forgotten cracks between extremes.
