LYN LIFSHIN
The Man across the Hall

THE MAN ACROSS THE HALL is as dark as the men I always dream of. Tall, he glides, a dancer, no wonder. His eyes, coal. I imagine he smells of lime, not garlic, not onion breath. I’m dancing with another, feel his eyes. So many women here, younger, gorgeous but our eyes lock. At least I think they do. He could be a wife beater. Those beautiful hands could choke and strangle but I refuse that end of the story and bathe in skin as he moves closer, brushes my hair with a “that was a lovely cha cha,” enough for one night
