LYN LIFSHIN
He was the Kind of Editor

I could scream at 30 states away. Hed e mail 12 times and then go silent, lose whatever he needed to have for a book so Id have to send it again and again. Mostly, he would not answer mail. It was hard to keep the promise Id made to be patient when dismissed eleven photo graphs I sent him for a cover, wanted a photograph hed approve of a horse with all feet in the air and then I would find a painter to copy it. Twenty e mails after that I held my breath to not scream all the way to Colorado. Then I got him on the phone and he had that kind of voice that even after all he did and didnt, turned sweet, that Mississippi boy moved farther west honey drawl and I could feel his smile thru the cell phone and melted like too many Im sure

GREGG DOTOLI After Night Snow

White snow, Piled four fingers high , on The still , once green , pine branches The tree a white caked couch For the bright red cardinals. The muffled silence and chill-breeze Whisper morning peace. The red dots rearrange themselves By natures clock.
