LYN LIFSHIN
Branbury Beach

some of us dashed thru beach grass when it was still light to press beach plum into our skin and when the salsa band began we danced till the moon was a white plate. The ones with children dipped them in the lake while teenaged lovers went to it in bleached reeds. If there’d been a body there you might not see it. Night water filled my hair. If I was lucky, someone would touch shoulders and hold me, maybe unaware of the good he’d done, especially that one with black eyes and onyx hair, mine only here

C.S. FUQUA
Fade

Stuck between the past and its shadow, girls cry over broken dolls and missed menstruation, while abandoned daddies sigh goodbye when losses devour predawn hours. Why does she swing back and back again into memory? Why won’t the knot slip and the body fall into oblivion? No one knows about the message, the quiver in her voice, the plea to call, to remember, to honor despite betrayal. No one knows. No one knows but me.

C.S. FUQUA
Nesting Empty

Twelve years of mornings and afternoons, of pickups and dropoffs, of good weather, bad, in sickness and health, anger, joy, sadness, excitement, indifference... What will replace the hellos, the goodbyes? A change of routine yes, certainly, that and much more, but the same old feelings will remain, always, a sense of loss at departure, of jubilation upon return.
