EMILY STRAUSS
Light the Temporary Intruder

Our consciousness is driven by light, which drives the rest— sleep then a nightly act of surrender to the darkness we fear, when we are suspended in inky black and know the folly that the progress of the day is the reason of this world, our human impulse to remake it in our image only a mirage. Darkness becomes its casualty, luxurious duskiness that teases the mind with visions, the hour of the wolf, it was called, so much murkiness in the universe. Still we must search for dark, else it will come looking for us and we will be as unprepared as stars, anomalies of space, or planets, accidents of dust— we are born out of dark die back into it, we are made of night, light is only a temporary intruder.

EMILY STRAUSS
In the Fullness of Time

time—rapids and calm shores the past slipping by like a barge adrift on a river pushes aimlessly— a shipping hazard now, abandoned the future a mere premise based on our world's rhythmic phenomena— heartbeats, waves washing on shore the slow phases of the moon's face seem to signal forward motion, but there is no 'now', it's only a fiction there is no gateway, merely a gauze suddenly dropped against the night like an ephemeral wind slowing, entropy increasing as if time occurs the future unremembered as the past is unforgotten, yet the presentists say 'now' proceeds in a straight line like the illusory track of a snake on a sand dune in fall— here and gone
