MARTIN JERVIS
Snowdrops in Melancholia

Small, naked heads thrust Into a new blindness of light, Silent and sepulchral, Sharp leaves are barely born. A stiff snow breeze tosses And tugs birth’s pallor, Single white blossoms Growing beside the gravestones. Under sparse pillows of moss The boned earth is sleeping, Licked fast and hard In a bitter cross of grief. The grey stones echo memories That time erodes but Die and burrow into a life loam Feeding in the flow. Cruel virgin spring is stiff With frost and ice, Greets ragged blooms Half teased to suck the sun, Bitter rain scars Fold the youth lost petals, Many tongues lap Into a shallow vascular tide. Willow weeps and bends Old limbs in ceaseless vigil, Ochre buds swell on their gums And leaves open out As season totters on old legs, Grey and muscled Shedding a single hot tear Above the fallen legions.

MARTIN JERVIS
Thirst

The thirst of deserts roams the dunes, A tapping stick on streams dried up, A slippered dream of lazy stones Moves not a crystal grain. In time the rocks come pouring down Unglazed beneath the lusty moon, Hot fired by feel of neon sun. Here on this plain, This wilderness of winding hours That climbs up salty on the infant bud And begs the hidden spring to flow Across a sheltered tongue. Running The pear-shaped drops condense To lap their broken tears with dust And quench each bowl of light.
