SAYED H. RAHANI
The White Rose in the Backyard

There is a white rose in my backyard. It bore many white rose buds yesterday. I saw many white roses magnificently blown, Their petals, immersed in dew, all open. The flowers were so lavish with beauty that they attracted A lot of bees, and even a hummingbird Came and departed again and again, And when the wind accompanied the rain, The rose petals broke away one by one; The roses aged one day, not even a full day, Whose beauty dominated my memory; Whose unexpected death dumbfounded me. They were just like babies who are not yet born,

The Midnight Breeze

In the midst of night, When no arrival was surmised, No guest was expected, A knock was heard on the window. Startled by the abrupt rustling, hissing sound, I woke up, Being all eyes, Looking around, Listening carefully. It was dead silent. Waiting few more moments to hear the noise again, But to no avail. Fancying it was just a dream, Yes, just a dream, Wherewith I was convinced, And tried to go back to sleep. No sooner had I closed my eyes Than the room was resonated with the same noise. I heard the midnight stranger Breathing its universal song. As soon as I looked at the window, I saw a branch of honeysuckle, Toing and froing, Striking the window softly. I heard the stranger once again, Singing and singing, Travelling everywhere.
