DAVID JAMES
A Place Like Us

for our 37th wedding anniversary love spreads and melts, love crumbles into smaller pieces that we sweep into love piles and place in the corners of every room, in the car, in the back yard, sprinkling love on the bedspread and couch, into the morning oatmeal, yogurt, scrambled eggs. after 37 years, I’m still lost in your dark eyes, weak in the knees and elsewhere, still waiting with bated breath for you to settle under the blankets, mold your warm body against my warm body. love dreams of living in a place like us. it sleeps and laughs; it rises like smoke into the sky, into the heavens. love holds our hands when we can’t hold each other’s, when the miles add up between us, when darkness falls and we forget why we’re here—love opens the door, invites us in and feeds us, tells us we never ever have to leave.

Beyond Divine

“Scandinavians have outgrown gods.” from “Findings,” Harper’s, Dec. 2013 gods are dumb. gods are stupid. fuck you, gods—that’s what we say as we cut the old strings from heaven, no, from the sky. we undid our misguided beliefs, threw away the blinds and now walk by ourselves along the bay. water is water. rain is rain. the earth turns and the sun appears on the horizon. even at night when ocean waves crash and spray on the beach, the stars do nothing more than shine.
