MALAY ROYCHOUDHURY
Homeland

Canít say my Uttarpara ancestral home isnít my homeland, I know unidentified bodies, their eyes plucked out, float by in the Ganga. Canít say my auntís Ahiritola isnít my homeland, I know abducted girls are bound and gagged in Sonagachi nearby. Canít say my uncleís at Panihati isnít my homeland, I know who was killed, and where, in broad daylight. Canít say my adolescent Konnagar isnít my homeland, I know who was sent to cut whose throat. Canít say my youthís Calcutta isnít my homeland, I know who threw bombs, set fire on buses, trams. Canít say West Bengal isnít my homeland, Iíve the right to be tortured to death in its lock-ups, Iíve the right to starve and have rickets in its tea gardens, Iíve the right to hang myself at its handloom mills, Iíve the right to become bones buried by its party lumpen, Iíve the right to have my mouth taped, silenced, Iíve the right to hear the leaders sprout gibberish, abuse, Iíve the right to a heart attack on its streets blocked by protestors, Canít say Bengali isnít my homeland. Translated from the original ĎAamar Swadeshí by Malay Roychoudhury
