MARTIN JERVIS
A Very Ordinary Room

A very ordinary room The crossed parangs point To a union jack clock Egging an opuntia off the sill Onto bare floorboards Into a pile of chimney back soot. What a bastard! Above the pygmy crafted drum With no message to beat The frightening African mask Has lost its terror As the wallpaper shows Through the eyes Of the charcoal face. Although the wallpaper is terrifying! The wooden spoon stirs In the soft glazed German stein Clamping the rancid lid On the turning beer. Two weeks old! Under the four colour amateur Painting of no value The bookcase stands dusty. Where are the books? There is a book of Shelley Under the aftershave lotion. It’s a lone visitor! Familiarity can be soothing, A balm when the world is strange. It’s a very ordinary room!
