SHE WAITS

Dinner has been ready for an hour And she waits Her husband said he would be home on time but she knows the drill - He's gone to a bar again to lose himself, to be in the company of others in the same crowded place, drinking scotch and reciting corporate war stories Meanwhile she thinks of the days when she and husband had been a lighthouse for each other, a beacon over turbulent seas But that was then and now - as darkness gathers - she waits again ...and wonders

A Father's Memory

He remembers his son's eyes, clear and brown as marbles, And when laughter made those eyes light up with joy. He remembers the boy's step, like a thoroughbred's, galloping through the dust, And those enormous kites soaring into the unknown. A boy in cowboy boots exploring the jungle. A boy enchanted with frogs and the graceful flight of birds. He tries to find him now in this other jungle, sinking into the quicksand of another world, And he still remembers those eyes - so young, so clear and brown as marbles.
