LYN LIFSHIN
OCTOBER 1

my cat on the rug in the sun. Some thing inside starts to vibrate, maybe like her larynx , a vibration that ends in a purr. She kneads, I need this mystery to feel content as she does. And at times Iíve heard and wonder if it is like it is with catís purring , to calm when wounded or scared or readying to die

LYN LIFSHIN
WRITING A POEM LIKE WHY AND WHEN A CAT PURRS

under the quilt, Jete nuzzling in the crook of my arms, her motor going wilder. I love the sense of her contentment, feel it moving inside me the way when a poem works, itís as much a mystery as that vibration from larynx, something welling up that canít be stopped, canít be coaxed when it isnít there. A comfort, an in- visible quilt Iím wrapped in on the metro and then, too, as they say cats purr from terror, fear, a feel of death closing in and too donít poems do this? And like a catís purr maybe strengthen bones, heal damaged organs?
