On the Train

A blind woman, a blind man, an elderly legless man in a wheelchair, a one-legged man on crutches push though standing passengers, imploring, demanding. A jolly band of three Bolivian musicians who play so well you feel anything you give them is small recompense for a little pleasure in the midst of so much unhappiness, ask for applause as well as money. A few people give them coins; However, for the most part, the faces of the middle-class passengers are blank, distant. They are tired of the endless importuning and money is tight in their homes as well.

The Immigrants

Squatting on the sidewalk, in front of a display of consumer luxuries, a Romanian gipsy woman, colorful skirts spread around her, holds out a beseeching hand, her drowsy baby nuzzling at her breast. Less exotic Romanians of both sexes, usually adolescents, drift through foot traffic, accost you as you pass, carrying signature small accordions on which they squeeze out gay, creaky, obviously non-Argentine folk tunes, escapees from war-torn Eastern Europe.
